The shooting of the cartoon "Book of Life" Jorge Gutierres was 14 years old. As a student of the California School of Arts, he created an animation short film about the day of the dead - a Mexican festival dedicated to the memory of the dead. The tape was awarded several premiums and shown at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. Gutierres had his agent, who advised to remove the full-length cartoon on the shifters. "I bought a book" How to write a script for 21 days "and hit me," recalls Jorge. "But all the others convinced me that the picture about the Latin American traditions in general and this festival in particular will be not interested in anyone, and I threw the project."
Jorge Gutierres, like any Mexican director, dreamed of working with Guillermo del Toro. And this chance he fell on the shooting of the cartoon "Book of Life", which eventually won the nomination for the Golden Globe. .
And only when the animated series "El Tigre", the author of which was Gutierrez, received five AMMI awards, Jorge fell out proposals for work on the full-length ribbon. "I pulled out my scenario from the box and, like any Latin American cinematographer, began to call Guillermo del Toro. And one day he, as the Mexican Santa Claus, appeared, - says the director. - The meeting was terrible. But Del Toro was familiar with "El Tigre" thanks to his daughters, and he, saying that he likes all this madness, "agreed to become a producer."
However, Del Toro's joining almost played a sore joke with the project. "Many have decided that we remove the horror movie. We needed to make a lot of effort to convince everyone in the opposite, "Gutierres continues. "By the way, it was Guillermo forced me to rewrite the final: Initially, my story did not have a Heppi-End."
But why exactly the day of the dead? "This holiday is very important to me," explains Jorge. "When I was nine years old, my best friend died." But I always remember him. I even got married on the day of the dead, because I wanted him to be my wedding witness. After all, at the heart of the celebration of the Day of the Dead lies the conviction that while you remember your ancestors, tell their stories, prepare their dishes and sing their songs, they are with you. They live in your heart. "
